Lyon singing Scully’s praises
By Glenn McFarlane

GARRY Lyon is such an unabashed Chris Judd fan that when he compares the early years of the dual Brownlow Medal winner to a 20-year-old with only 22 games to his credit, you have to take notice. And when Lyon revealed that he recently sat down to speak with that same player - a person out of contract at the end of the season when he will have to make the multi-million-dollar decision of his career - the plot thickens.Speaking on Triple M, the former Melbourne captain acknowledged that he had recently spoken to Tom Scully, the player Demons fans would dearly love to be the next skipper of their club. But the rub is that the AFL's newest club, Greater Western Sydney - Kevin Sheedy with a cheque book if you like - want to make him the face of the 18th franchise. Was Lyon's talk with Scully part of a Demons attempt to get him over the line? Or was it simply a young star on the rise talking to a one-time great of the game? Maybe it was a bit of both. Lyon was coy about the course of the discussion, other than to say that he has no idea which way Scully is leaning. Whatever the case, Lyon said the Demons needed to - and would - move heaven and earth to retain him.

Best is yet to come from Demons
By Tony Sheahan

MELBOURNE sat its critics on their backside on Friday night, now it's "bring on the Magpies". The Demons' confidence is at a season-high after convincingly beating Essendon and now they want a shot at the best in the land."It's a big challenge for us," Melbourne's Nathan Jones said after the 33-point win. "Collingwood is the best team in the competition, so hopefully we can reproduce this effort."We will take a really good look at the Magpies and watch how they play, and then be into them for the Queen's Birthday."I'm looking forward to seeing where we rank against the best."Our consistency will be the key. Our season has been up and down, so if we persist with winning the contested possession and tackle count, you go a long way to winning the game."

Attitude was the difference, says Scully
By Jake Niall

MELBOURNE'S gun youngster Tom Scully said the personnel Melbourne selected was ''irrelevant'' to the Demons' massive improvement against Essendon. Scully suggested that attitude and some specifics that ''needed to be tidied up'' were more significant than the availability of players and said that he was still a couple of weeks away from full match fitness. Scully, who came back into the side for his first senior game for 2011 on Friday, labelled speculation about his playing future ''irrelevant''. He said he was leaving the matter to the club and his management. Scully said the Demons had been motivated to some extent by comments made by Carlton players about the team's hardness. ''Obviously we've been kicked around a bit by a few different people in the - not the media - but different players, different clubs. So to come out and respond the way we did was fantastic,'' said Scully, who made a startling return, gaining 24 disposals, after playing little more than half a VFL game this season. ''I mean, obviously, we had a few guys come and say certain things, but actions speak louder than words, so just really a good all-round performance.'' ''I mean … we didn't read too much into it, but obviously when someone has a crack at your commitment to footy, obviously that's a bit disappointing. ''But we just wanted to get out and you know there was other factors driving us this week."
