JACK Grimes says he will let the captaincy process take its course and he is adamant the right appointment will be made for the 2014 season.
Grimes, who was co-captain with Jack Trengove in 2012-13, has previously stated that he would love to lead the club again next year. But he is confident new coach Paul Roos will oversee the right person for the role.
“I don’t worry about it to be honest, because I know at the end of the day, the players and the coaches will get together … and I know the right decision will be made, with Roosy to make the final decision,” Grimes told melbournefc.com.au.
“Whether it’s me or someone new, honestly, with Roosy’s experience, I think we can back him to make the right decision.
“I’m not stressing about it at this stage, but I’m trying to go about my business, as I normally would.”
Grimes said he hadn’t gone about his leadership any differently during the pre-season.
“‘Trenners’ (Jack Trengove), who stood down from being co-captain, hasn’t gone about it any differently over the pre-season. He’s still exactly the same leader as when he was co-captain, so not a lot has changed over the pre-season,” he said.
“I’m just trying to learn as much as I can off the new coaching staff, with all of their experience, so I can learn what leadership looks like. I’m really trying to keep developing as a leader, but not worry about the actual tag at the moment.
“With or without the title, I’d still be in the same head space.”
Grimes said the three-day pre-season camp to Sorrento earlier in the week was highly productive and a great opportunity to build relationships.
“It was a different looking camp to what we’ve been on because there wasn’t as much training. We had a couple of good sessions down there, but it was about the team bonding side of things,” he said.
“We had Leading Teams there and had some really good group sessions with all of the players, coaches and a lot of the staff.
“It was really good because we often don’t get that time together. We had some really good discussions about the upcoming year, our aims, focuses and what we want to get out of the games, so it went really well.”
Grimes, who missed eight weeks in the middle of the season with a collarbone injury, said he was progressing well over the pre-season.
“The body’s all good. I finished a solid session on [Friday] morning, but the body’s feeling really good,” he said.
“It’s been refreshing to see all of the new faces around, and we’ve had a different looking pre-season. I’ve felt really good this pre-season and it’s been different with the players coming back a little bit.
“It changed things up a little bit, but I think it refreshed the guys. They’re now looking really energetic and it looks like they’re really enjoying their training at the moment.”
