IF THERE was one player who impressed midfield coach Adem Yze when he arrived at Melbourne last year it was James Jordon.

The youngster caught the eye of the highly regarded coach, who moved across from Hawthorn in October, with his work rate a real standout.

His attitude saw him make his debut in Melbourne’s season-opener, and most recently earn the Round 8 NAB AFL Rising Star Nomination – what Yze declared as well-deserved recognition for the 20-year-old.

“He took my eye really early in the piece,” Yze said on the latest episode of The Talking Points.

“His work rate and how diligent he was to get better stood out from day one for me.

“Everything he’s receiving, the accolades – he’s getting what he deserves. He puts a lot of work into his training.

“He’s probably our most honest player. You will see him in defence helping out our defenders, and then you’ll see him up the other end kicking goals.

“His work rate is at the top end, so he’s getting just reward.”

Meanwhile, Yze is also settling into his new role.

After nine seasons at the Hawks, and with a portfolio including specialist goalkicking, development, strategy and opposition, and assistant coaching, the 43-year-old is relishing the change.

“It’s a role I haven’t had before,” Yze said.

“Included in that is stoppages. With less staff, there’s more responsibility, so having midfield running patterns as well as stoppages is a lot of work, but it’s something I’ve really enjoyed.

“I’m really lucky and fortunate to have Gawny (Max Gawn) and Jack Viney, some leaders of our footy club, within that group.

“To lean on them and get their input on it is really important and they’ve been terrific.”
