AN INABILITY to get the ball into attack was the main area that Melbourne needs to address, according to coach Dean Bailey.

Speaking after his side's 39-point loss to Essendon in Thursday night's NAB Cup qualifying final, Bailey lamented the lopsided 60-35 inside 50 count.

"If you move the ball quick enough into the forward line, that is when you can put the ball in front of a forward. I think you'll see more often that the kick will be put to a spot rather than an actual player in front," Bailey said after the loss.

"I think you'll find that the pressure up the ground is going to be far greater and we were unable to apply enough pressure but we couldn't get the ball inside 50 either. Thirty five, 36 inside 50s is not where we want to be."

But Bailey paid tribute to forwards Liam Jurrah and Addam Maric, who each kicked three goals despite limited supply.

"If we can get 18 plus games into LJ (Jurrah) again that would be great. To be fair to Maz (Maric), he has had a pretty good pre-season, he's worked really hard, so to see three goals next to his name was good," he said.

"His forward opportunistic part of his game is going to become a strength of his game and hopefully he can do that this year."

But Bailey was disappointed with his side's lack of discipline, particularly in the fourth quarter after the result had been decided.

"There were a couple of 50m penalties thrown in there. There were a couple of free kicks paid against us. That was the last five minutes and that was disappointing to finish the game like that," he said.

The good news for the Demons is that Ricky Petterd and Tom Scully are likely to play in next week's NAB Challenge matches after missing the two NAB Cup games.

Petterd was close to playing the Bombers after injuring his hamstring three weeks ago, while Scully has been suffering knee soreness.

"I reckon Tommy's close. It was just a little setback but his last week hasn't been too bad, so if we can get some running into him, hopefully he'll play next week," Bailey said.

"Again, he's going to be a guy who we just wait to see how he pulls up."
