MELBOURNE has unveiled its new clash guernsey and its alternative clash jumper at its  first official hit-out of the year at Casey Fields last Saturday.

The main clash guernsey is a red jumper featuring a blue Demon on the chest, which Melbourne president Jim Stynes said reflected what the members wanted.

"We put it to the members and the members were very vocal about keeping the Demon. It's part of our iconology. This is part of our maintaining our link with the past. Our past is all about Melbourne, the red and blue and the Demon, so we've tried to maintain that," Stynes told melbournefc.com.au.

"We've done a lot of work with the AFL, so for most of our clash games, we'll be able to use our red jumper with blue Demon. We also have another jumper where we'll have to use on some one-off clashes.

"We'll be using it in the NAB Cup. It's got a strong presence and it'll have red and blue."

Stynes said the club is committed to wearing red and blue.

"We want to wear it as much as possible and the only time we'll deviate on that is when we have no choice," he said.

"Our club has gone through a number of designs in our history – there was a time when we were called the 'Invincible Whites'. We have a link with that colour, but we will promote the red and blue – that's Melbourne.

"We talk about red and blue going through our veins, so we need to stay on that."

The 1991 Brownlow Medallist is confident all people concerned with Melbourne will support the clash jumper, including the players.

"The players will feel connected to the club through this jumper. Unfortunately, the clash jumper in the past didn't have that feel," Stynes said.

"The members spoke and we were very lucky the AFL … allowed us to change [the jumper] within the two-year period."
