Plunge adds to Lyon intrigue
By Mike Sheahan

BETTING plunges in football aren't always what they seem. There are times when it appears the contents of a piggy bank can send betting agencies into a flurry, prompting a suspension of the market and the inevitable news releases to the media. Yes, we are a touch sceptical about the proliferation of media stories on exotic bets in football. However, as Jack Dyer used to say with such conviction, where there's smoke, there's blue cod. Herald Sun racing writer Nick Quinn says four leading corporate bookmakers are holding bets that will cost them up to $20,000 if Ross Lyon is appointed to coach Melbourne next season. He says Lyon has been backed from $9 to $2 to get the Melbourne job. While punters might be doing nothing more than backing a hunch, or following the latest media speculation, it is a development that adds to the deep intrigue about Lyon's future.

Time to trade me: Warnock
By Martin Blake

MELBOURNE defender Matthew Warnock is on his way out of the club. Warnock's manager Colin Young told the website Sports News First yesterday that Warnock, 27, would seek a trade. The Demons would not comment, but meetings with players are continuing this week. Warnock played just four games this season, and 55 in a six-year career. He has been playing for Casey in the VFL. ''Matty seriously believes that he can still play a lot of AFL football and he wants that opportunity,'' Young told the website.
