JESSE Hogan's surgery to remove a malignant testicular tumor was a success, with the Melbourne spearhead expected to return to the club in a week's time.

Melbourne announced on Tuesday Hogan had been diagnosed with testicular cancer, with CT scans revealing the cancer had not spread to any other part of his body.

Demons coach Simon Goodwin said on Sunday Hogan would spend time at home in Perth before returning to prepare for his on-field comeback.

"Jesse's operation went extremely well. He's going to have another week away from the club, so we'll get him back probably the week after and then start getting him back into some training," Goodwin said after Melbourne's 14-point loss to North Melbourne at the MCG. 

"But he's really positive, he's in a great headspace and (we're) looking forward to getting him back around the club."

Melbourne said on Tuesday Hogan would not require chemotherapy and was expected to make a full recovery from his illness.

The spearhead is targeting a return to the field in the next four to eight weeks.
