CLAYTON Oliver has been on the receiving end of some unwarranted criticism in recent weeks, and he certainly responded in fine fashion on Wednesday night.
With 34 disposals, 22 contested possessions, 11 clearances and one goal, Oliver’s best on ground performance guided the Demons to victory against the Crows.
And while the 23-year-old is a man of few words, his belief is high after the performance at Adelaide Oval.
“I think I’ve always had confidence in myself – it’s just getting back to how I used to play,” he said on The Talking Points.
“It’s probably just getting more proactive around the football and around the stoppages and keep moving.”
Oliver did all that and more at Adelaide Oval in Round 10, using the ball at 74 percent efficiency and gaining 521 metres for his side.
The Dees were in the firing line on the back of their 51-point loss to the Power, but the talk in the media doesn’t reach Melbourne’s No.13.
“It doesn’t really faze me too much, as long as what the coaches tell me and what everyone says inside the club – that’s probably what I listen to the most,” he said.
And while ignoring the external noise, he doesn’t have any trouble finding motivation when he goes out on the field.
“It’s probably more pressure on myself,” Oliver said.
“I don’t want to let the team down – I want to play as good as I can and help the team.
“I think everyone wants to do that at the Melbourne Football Club at the moment – that’s what we’re trying to do.”
