Stynes’ role old news to Demons
PRESIDENT steps in to run footy department at club in crisis - Yep, that's a back page yarn every day of the week .. if, of course, it happened. Yes, Melbourne has appointed president Jim Stynes and his deputy Don McLardy to share the board role of "football director" for the rest of the season. It was, though, a decision made at the club's March board meeting - before Melbourne had lost a game this year - not at Monday night's board meeting, as reported yesterday. The board decided Stynes and McLardy were equipped to handle the role rather than embark on a search for another former player to replace Andrew Leoncelli, who was football director until his resignation in December for personal reasons. The decision remained "in-principle" until general manager of football Chris Connolly and coach Dean Bailey were advised. Stynes and McLardy also saw the opportunity to have a closer look at Bailey at work, given he is in the final year of his contract, for they will be part of the panel that decides his future. A football director is the link between the board and the football department, the conduit between the respective groups on issues of mutual interest. The problem for Melbourne is the timing of the story.

Jamar left to ruck for Demons, Warnock in
By Emma Quayle
MELBOURNE last night resisted making dramatic changes after its wobbly trip west last week, but dropped three players from the team well beaten by West Coast and asked Mark Jamar to handle the ruck duties almost entirely on his own. Cale Morton, Jamie Bennell and Stefan Martin, Jamar's back-up, were all left out, while the Demons named Matthew Warnock for the first time this season after losing Jared Rivers to an ankle injury at training during the week.
Melbourne v Adelaide match preview
By Will Brodie
The problems for the Dees are more about what is not happening. They are not getting enough run and carry from the midfield and defence. They are not adapting to teams that employ a vigorous forward press. They are not moving the ball into attack with confidence. They are not kicking goals, or taking marks inside-50. They are not exerting enough pressure on opponents running out of defence or around stoppages. Yet the Demons remain good enough to have seen off a feisty Lions outfit two games ago, after conceding a five-goal start. And while some of the issues are related to immaturity - the Demons badly miss some more senior leadership after letting a raft of senior players go in the past two seasons - many of them can be rectified with a change of attitude. Confidence changes everything, and it egnerally follows sustained effort

Dees wield axe after loss
By AAP
MELBOURNE has reacted to last round's dismal loss to West Coast by dumping Cale Morton, Stefan Martin and Jamie Bennell for Sunday's match with Adelaide at the MCG. Experienced defender Jared Rivers (ankle) was also forced out through injury and there could be more cuts to come, with the 25-man squad to be trimmed to 22 today. Matthew Bate and Ricky Petterd are among the inclusions. The Crows have lost tall defender Phil Davis (shoulder) and running player Richard Tambling (suspension), with Rory Sloane among their inclusions.
