The Demons had to wipe off a further $767,000 when it started it third Debt Demolition campaign this year. Entering the Foundation Heroes dinner, a further $524,000 was required to wipe off the debt.
Remarkably, Lawrie De La Rue, who heads up Melbourne’s joint major sponsor Hankook and sponsored the Foundation Heroes night, contributed another substantial figure. His wife Carol-Ann also donated a significant amount.
During the night, the ‘last man standing’ donation process resulted in six people remaining at $15,000, five at $25,000 and two at $50,000.
In 2008, the inaugural Debt Demolition raised more than $2 million in a single evening.
It was the first step to eradicating more than $5 million debt.
At least 310 Foundation Heroes have contributed $5000 or more over the past three Debt Demolition campaigns.
This year, more than 65 members joined the group.
The Foundation Heroes are recognised by the club as the group that saved and helped wipe the debt from Melbourne.
Meanwhile, Melbourne officially previewed its new club emblem at the event.
