Memorable match
Round 11, 1999: Melbourne 13.11 (89) d Collingwood 11.12 (78), MCG
The occasion of Melbourne playing Collingwood on the Queen's Birthday holiday has seen some great contests over the years. In 1999, Melbourne defeated Collingwood by 11 points, after a hard fought tussle. The Pies led at quarter-time and half-time, before the Demons gained a one-point advantage at three quarter-time. In a poignant note, it would also be club legend Garry Lyon’s last match. He booted two goals. Shane Woewodin received three Brownlow votes - a year before he won the award - for his performance.

Players to watch
Melbourne: Colin Garland

It was back to the future for Garland, who returned to his junior days and played as a key forward last round. His role reversal from down back into attack was telling, as he kicked two consecutive goals in the final term to help Melbourne to victory. He ably assisted in form forward Mitch Clark, who has worked tirelessly all season. It will be fascinating to see if Garland has another crack in attack.

Collingwood: Dale Thomas
The 2010 premiership player starred against the Suns last round, collecting 32 disposals (including 20 contested possessions), 11 clearances and booting three goals. He also had a hand in several others. It was Thomas’ best performance so far this season.

Match-up to watch
James Frawley v Travis Cloke
Expect the 2010 All-Australian defender to take on one of the game’s best forwards this round. Frawley’s return, after missing last round with a foot injury, will be critical for the Demons, given Cloke’s match-winning abilities.

Melbourne has its highest number of draws - five - against Collingwood, with its most recent coming in Round 12, 2010, when Melbourne 11.10.76 equalled Collingwood 9.22.76.

Foot in both camps
Those who have been involved with both clubs include: Clarrie Abbott, Neil Balme, Ross Brewer, Leigh Brown, Phil Carman, Ted Carroll, Henry Coles, Allan Davis, Tony Elshaug, Reg Gibb, Wayne Gordon, Roy Gray, ‘Max’ Hislop, Alex Holland, Bill Homan, Ray Jones, Frank Kelly, Dan Lanigan, Gordon Lawrie, Ted Leach, Billy Libbis, Mick Maguire, Bill McCulloch, Alan McGowan, Glenn McLean, Peter Moore, Mark Neeld, Charlie Newman, Dave Newman, Jack Power, Robert Pyman, Lou Riley, Alan Ryan, Dannie Seow, Roy Stabb, Wally Sykes, Percy Wilson, Shane Woewodin.

What Mark Neeld says …
“The boys have been great … they’ve been amazing. They’re really keen to improve in a whole heap of areas and they’ve been working their backsides off - that hasn’t changed. I’ve seen enough to know that that will continue.”

Key Melbourne question
After winning its first match for the season, can the Demons back it up with another four quarter effort and, dare we say it, pinch two in a row?

Key Collingwood question
Collingwood is the form team of the competition, having won its past seven in succession. Will it make it eight in a row?

Summary
It may have taken until round 10, but Melbourne’s first win of the season over Essendon was one to remember. Not only was it Mark Neeld’s first as senior coach, the win was also achieved against the second-placed Bombers. On the back of its best result in 2012, Melbourne now confronts Collingwood on its biggest home and away clash for the season - Queen’s Birthday. The traditional clash will be another great challenge for the Demons, as they seek to back up with another four quarter effort against a team vying for its ninth win of the season. The subplots to this match are fascinating. Neeld will coach against the club he became a premiership assistant coach with for the first time for premiership points. Assistant Leigh Brown will also coach against the team he became a premiership player with in 2010. Given that Melbourne defeated Collingwood in the NAB Cup under Neeld, and the intimate knowledge he and Brown will have, intrigue is added to the contest. The Dees will have gained confidence from that match - albeit a pre-season hit-out - and from the fact that it enters having defeated the Bombers. But Collingwood is an outstanding team, and attempting to overcome the Magpies will be worth watching.
