First quarter

Hawthorn peppered the goals early and failed to capitalise.

Paul Puopolo kicked the first goal of the match, but soon Mitch Clark opened Melbourne’s account and then proceeded to boot three in a row.

The Demons led by nine points at the 26-minute mark, before Puopolo landed his second to reduce the deficit to three points at quarter-time.

Second quarter
Melbourne may have entered the second term in front, but it was Hawthorn which dominated the quarter. 

The Hawks booted six goals to zip to lead by 37 points at half-time.

But the margin could have been greater had the brown and gold kicked straighter. It had 20 scoring shots to eight at the main change.

Third quarter
The Hawks kicked the first two goals of the second half to extend their lead to 53 points. 

Melbourne didn’t get their first on the board until the 13-minute mark courtesy of Jordie McKenzie.

Although Jeremy Howe backed up with another for the Demons, the Hawks were still up by 37 points - the same half-time lead - at the final change.

Fourth quarter
The Hawks rubbed further salt into the wound when Clinton Young kicked the first goal of the final term within the opening 30 seconds.

Jimmy Magner was Melbourne’s only goalscorer in the final term, as Hawthorn booted a further five goals. 

In the end, the Hawks ran away with a 66-point victory.
