The Melbourne Football Club Under 12 girls side defeated North Melbourne by 25 points in their recent annual match.  The game is designed for junior female footballers to showcase their skills and receive training from industry leading female coaches.

The team was made up of 25 girls from various junior clubs, including South East Juniors, South Metro Footy League and Yarra Juniors.

All Australian and High Performance Academy player Kara Donnellan coached the Under 12 side. Kara is also the Melbourne Football Club’s ambassador for women’s footy.

Donnellan said, “It’s just so cool to see so many young girls playing footy, and they are so talented and skillful. It’s been a great experience for me and the girls.”

Donnellan took a personal interest in every player, mentoring them from their first try out session through the three training sessions, right up to the game.

Melbourne Football Club Community Manager Debbie Lee said, “Having an all girls under 12 side is one of the many initiatives that we’ve implemented to show our ongoing support to women in football.  It’s great to be able to give these young girls the opportunity to be able to learn from the best in the industry, while also having fun.”

The girls wore the red and blue with pride, and took home their  playing kit as a memento from their win.
