VICE-president Don McLardy says Tom Scully left Melbourne for Greater Western Sydney due to “an unprecedented offer in AFL history”.

McLardy and chief executive Cameron Schwab spoke about the Scully departure at AAMI Park on Monday afternoon.

“The Melbourne Football Club made Tom an offer and we made one offer and we haven’t wavered from that offer,” McLardy said.

“We were very conscious that we have a great list of players and we need to make sure that we didn’t look after one player to the detriment of all of the other players on our list.

“Our members gave us that message all throughout this year.

“We’ll now be focusing very strongly on the AFL for appropriate compensation. And as a club, we still think that Melbourne Football Club is in the best position that it’s been in for many, many years.

“We’ve faced many issues over our 150-year history, but for the three years that our Jim Stynes board has been together at our club - our club has faced many issues and overcome all of those and this will be no different.”
