MELBOURNE has gone back to the future and secured a major sponsorship deal with Hertz Australia.

Hertz was Melbourne’s major sponsor in 1984 and has now rejoined as the club’s official ball partner and coaches’ collar partner. Hertz will also appear on the MCG big screen when the Demons kick a goal.

The agreement coincides with the Jim Stynes Tribute Game against the Western Bulldogs this round.

Melbourne president Don McLardy said the club was “rapt to welcome Hertz back”. He added that it held a fascinating place in the club’s history.

“Jim Stynes was actually wearing a Melbourne jumper with a Hertz logo on it in his very first training run with the Club back in 1984,” he said.

“For Hertz to be back with the club as we celebrate Jim’s life this weekend couldn’t be more fitting.

“I know our members and supporters will support Hertz the same way they have supported us.”

Region vice president and managing director Australasia of Hertz, Chris Rusden, said it was thrilled to partner with the Demons again.

“We are also delighted to be returning to the Melbourne Football Club as a major corporate supporter, particularly on the weekend of the inaugural Jim Stynes Tribute Game, which is a significant event for the club and its supporters,” he said.

“Melbourne became the first Australian Rules club when it was formed in 1858, and Hertz invented car rental in 1918.

“It is only fitting that two pioneers in their respective fields join together in a mutually beneficial partnership.

“It is only fitting that two pioneers in their respective fields join together. Both organisations are major brands with long, proud histories, but continue to innovate and look toward the future, and we are excited by the opportunities that this partnership represents.”

Hertz is the largest worldwide airport general use car rental brand, operating from approximately 8,500 locations in 146 countries, including more than 200 locations in Australia.
