Benched Jack backs Neeld
Jack Trengove has backed coach Mark Neeld's decision to start him and Jack Grimes on the bench against Geelong
The midfielder insists he is happy to start wherever the coach wants him to.
Trengove only became aware that the decision had caused outsiders to comment when coach Mark Neeld joked about it in the team meeting on Tuesday morning.
The debate started after former premiership coach Paul Roos said on Fox Footy's On the Couch program that he was speechless when he saw both the Demons' co-captains starting the game on the bench.
On Tuesday morning, Neeld told SEN the decision was not a big deal in today's high-rotation era.
Trengove backed his coach, saying every player regularly had a turn at starting on the interchange bench.
"That is the way the game has gone these days," Trengove said. "We had 140-odd rotations throughout the game so it is not odd to be on the bench for short stints."
Some commentators have argued that having a captain on the ground when the ball was bounced is essential for symbolic value but Trengove did not hold that view.
"I don't think it makes a real difference," he said. "It is a team game and it is not about the individual person. It is about the team."
Trengove said his mindset remained exactly the same whether he started the game in the middle, the forward line or on the bench.
"It's all just the same and business as usual. It's just about making an impact when you come on, whether you are starting or not," Trengove said.
Trengove said that while it was taking time for the Demons to pick up every aspect of the new system and game-plan introduced during the pre-season, he could see signs of improvement every week.
He remained hopeful the turnaround would not be as protracted as some fear. "We will get there eventually and I think when it actually turns around it will happen really fast," Trengove said.
Asked to assess his own performance so far this season Trengove - the youngest captain in the game's history - said his main focus had been on ensuring he played his role every week.
"It's a really team defence-oriented game-plan that we have got and it involves absolutely everyone on the ground, so if there is one link in the chain that is out that is where we can fall down," Trengove said.
"I have been really enjoying it and we have got a lot of confidence in what Mark [Neeld] has brought to the table and where we are going as a group. I am really looking forward to the rest of the season to show more signs in improvement."
Of course he is not enjoying losing, a point he made more than once. And he knows this week represents another huge challenge for the winless Demons when they play Hawthorn on Friday night at the MCG.
"They (Hawthorn) won the premiership a few years back and have still got that core group of players together so it is going to be another great challenge," Trengove said.
"[It is] one we are looking forward to and the best way to measure how you're going is to come up against the best and that is where you learn the most as well."
