Summary
It could be argued last round’s win over Essendon was Dean Bailey’s finest as coach of Melbourne. The Demons entered last Friday night’s clash having lost their past three in a row and were under intense scrutiny outside of the club. Essendon had been impressive under first-year coach and club great James Hird; it would be no pushover. But the Demons produced a fine performance, coming back from a half-time deficit to run out 33-point winners. The likes of Jordan Gysberts, Jordie McKenzie, Jared Rivers, Brent Moloney, Jack Trengove, Brad Green and Stef Martin were outstanding, while James Strauss, Jeremy Howe, Michael Evans, Daniel Nicholson and Max Gawn - five players entering the match with five games of experience - all contributed. It was just what the Demons needed after injuries, a drop in form and confidence resulted in a tough few weeks. On Monday, Melbourne comes up against the reigning premiers and its greatest rival: Collingwood. Overcoming the Pies will be a massive challenge, but one the Demons are eager to take on. It could be a cracker, given Melbourne drew with Collingwood in its most recent encounter last year.

Players to watch
Melbourne: Jordan Gysberts

Gysberts’ career-best 30-disposal effort against Essendon last round earned him his second NAB AFL Rising Star nomination (he also gained one against Carlton in round 11 last year). His performance was pivotal in the win and further enhanced his reputation as one of the competition’s brightest prospects. Although unassuming in many respects, Gysberts’ clearance work is critical in Melbourne’s set-up.

Collingwood: Scott Pendlebury
Pendlebury turned it on against St Kilda last round - the team he won the 2010 Norm Smith Medal against - winning 32 disposals and claiming nine tackles. Pendlebury is critical to the Pies and a player the Dees must contain, even though injured duo Dane Swan and Dayne Beams and the suspended Dale Thomas won’t be by his side.

Match-up to watch
Stef Martin/Max Gawn v Cameron Wood/Leigh Brown
Martin has been in excellent form in recent weeks and will come up against Wood, who also shone last round with 40 hit outs. It promises to be an intriguing contest. Backing up will be Gawn, who is set to play his second match, after showing some good signs against the Dons last round. Brown remains an integral part of Collingwood’s set-up, having transformed his game into a genuine all-rounder tall.

Memorable match
Round 10, 1958: Melbourne 12.12 (84) d Collingwood 10.13 (73), MCG
The record attendance for a home and away match at the MCG, which stands to this day, was set in this match. A total of 99,346 saw the two sides meet on the Queen’s Birthday holiday. There was not a gap in the stands. It was a close, hard-fought contest between two of football’s greatest rivals. Melbourne drew away late in the game, carrying a handy 20-point lead into the final term. 'Big Bob' Johnson and Ron Barassi were outreaching all opposition. Laurie Mithen, who hated training, but could always be relied upon to rise to the occasion, was out-marking Bill Serong in the centre. Ian Ridley's four goals to three-quarter time put the final shine on a match memorable for the fine teamwork of the Demons. As Barrie Bretland wrote in the Sun, it was certainly an exhibition of 'muscle-jarring tackling, scorching pace and aerial agility.' In the end, the margin was less than two goals. Melbourne was home, by 11 points, and clear of Collingwood by eight points. It was an invaluable break of two wins. - By Lynda Carroll

What Dean Bailey says …
“The Queen’s Birthday game for us is a real pivot point in the middle of the year for us. The guys look forward to it and we’ve got something to prove on Monday, considering we were good on Friday. The next contest is what we’ll get judged on, so we’re keen to get the game going on Monday.”

Key Melbourne question
The Demons lost by the narrowest of margins and drew against the Pies last year. Can the Dees overcome the red-hot Pies this time around
