Todd Viney’s season assessment
Tom was a rookie this year. He was always seen as a defender, but played as a run-with midfielder. He then became a midfielder in his own right and made some significant improvements in the VFL. Tom made some good decisions with the footy and showed some good skills. He was elevated for a senior game.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Injured: foot

VFL reserves: Round 1 v Northern Bullants
Tom played a half - the first half - and also got 12 disposals. I was happy with Tom, because he missed a few weeks due to injury. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 2 v Port Melbourne
Tommy got through more game-time, which was good. We played him through the midfield and then wing. He struggled a bit for possessions, but we had him on John Baird, who is an experienced player. He was a little bit too defensive, but it was a good experience for him. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 3 v North Ballarat
Tom was solid in the midfield, but only had 14 touches. We wanted more possessions from him, when he played a midfield role. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 4 - Bye

VFL reserves: Round 5 v Frankston
Tommy had 22 touches, playing as a winger/half-forward. He did well. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 6 v Northern Bullants
Tom was probably best-on-ground, playing as a midfielder, which was a new role for him. He had about 30 possessions and kicked three goals, so that was really promising. He put himself right in contention to be promoted on that performance. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 7 v Bendigo Bombers
Tom came in for his first game of the year and kicked two goals. He had 15 possessions as a back-up midfielder. I was really pleased with Tom. He kicked two goals - both good. He also helped out in the ruck, so he was very versatile. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 8 - Bye

VFL: Round 9 v Williamstown
Tom didn’t have a lot of the ball, but played on the opposition’s most dangerous midfielders. He might’ve gone a bit too defensive, which stopped his attacking play. But he was conscious of not giving Williamstown’s key midfielders too much space, so I thought he was OK. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 10 v Sandringham
Tom didn’t get a lot of the ball, but played on [Jason] Gram. Gram didn’t get much either, which was important, due to his good use of the footy. Tommy did a lot of bullocking stuff in close - he had a lot of one percenters. He had the most team acts, and destroyed an opposition key player, so I was very pleased with Tom’s game. I rated him good because of the role he played for the team. He still had 11 touches, so he wasn’t quite out of it, but he didn’t let a good player have a big influence. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 11 v Collingwood
Tom kicked three goals as a midfielder. He didn’t get a huge amount of stats, but he played on one of their better midfielders - Tom Young - and did a good job, keeping him under check. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 12 v Coburg Tigers
Tom started well, but he was on Shane Tuck, who had 31 touches. Tom didn’t quite subdue him like we needed him to. Last match, Tom kicked three goals, and this game we didn’t get a goal out of him. I thought he might have been a bit leg weary. He didn’t have his normal impact. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 13 - Bye

VFL: Round 14 v Werribee Tigers
Tom had the job on Travis Tuck, who started at half-forward, before he shifted into the midfield. He controlled Tuck’s impact very well, although Tom didn’t get much of the ball. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 15 v Box Hill Hawks
Tom played really well, with 31 possessions, which was a big day out. We played him as a tagging midfielder, and we let him have greater freedom to win the ball. He read the play exceptionally well. It was pleasing for him, because he had been trying hard, but hadn’t got the results in recent matches. He was nearly not going to play, because he got a knock to the head the previous week, and he only got cleared on the Saturday morning to play by Dr Andrew Daff. So I was really pleased for him. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 16 v Frankston
Tom was pretty good - he had 11 touches in the third quarter, and was great at the stoppages and in the middle. Unfortunately, he was hurt in the last quarter, and didn’t come back on. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 17 - Bye

VFL: Round 18 v Geelong
I thought his first half as a midfielder was disappointing. He had limited impact at the stoppages and didn’t spread offensively and defensively. He played high half-forward in the third term and worked better, before playing wing in the last quarter. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 19 v Sandringham
Tom had a big impact, which was emphasised by his two goals in the third quarter. He played on the wing, and came through the midfield, and was a really useful contributor throughout the game. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 20 v Coburg Tigers
Tom was very good. He had 25 possessions, numerous clearances and was strong with his body work. He had six marks and four team acts. Apart from a 10-minute patch, early in the last quarter, I thought Tom battled on grandly against the odds. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 21 v Werribee Tigers
Tom was very good. He accumulated 27 disposals. His attacking spread was a feature of his game. In tight, he competed hard again and had a major influence over clearances. He needs to keep working on his defensive transition running or positioning to become a more complete footballer. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
Tom played his first game for the year - he had been in great form in the VFL. He struggled to get involved in the game, and found it hard to find the ball, but when he did, he used it effectively. He was involved in a couple of our goals. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide (emergency)/VFL: Qualifying final v Port Melbourne
Without his normal energy on display, Tom looked flat, and allowed the opposition midfield too much freedom. He needed to be more defensively minded in such situations. Brad Gotch

VFL: Semi-final v Werribee Tigers
Tom started strong, and was valuable at stoppage clearances early on, before he injured his calf and took no further part in the game. Kelly O’Donnell
