Godfrey pleased to get a run
Midfielder Simon Godfrey says he'll be better for his run next weekend - and hopes Melbourne will be, too
IT MAY not have been the overall result he was after, but midfielder Simon Godfrey was pleased to be offered the chance to run around at senior level when he was a late inclusion for Monday's clash with Hawthorn.
Godfrey was informed on Saturday he would be taking his place in the line-up, after youngster Clint Bartram broke down at training with a knee injury.
He ended the match with stats of 13 kicks and six handballs, and was happy with his performance – except for the shanked pass to Cameron Bruce he executed in the forward 50 in the final term, which ultimately resulted in a Hawthorn goal.
"It was probably a good start to come in, and after that run, I think I'll be better for it next weekend," he told
melbournefc.com.au.
"I was able to run the game out, so that was good. I started to cramp in the last quarter, and I missed a few kicks, but I thought up until three-quarter time, my kicks were pretty good.
"I was happy with my skills up until then, but when I started to get a bit fatigued, I missed a few, but I'll just work on that during the week and get better."
He reiterated the sentiments of coach Neale Daniher and said it was disappointing the side wasn't able to apply its first-quarter form to the whole match.
"We started well the week before as well. We're playing well up front and we just have to get better at the second and third quarters," he said.
"I'm not too sure why it's happening. We're not putting four quarters of footy together yet, and once we get our form back, we always put four quarters together. We're just not there yet."
Godfrey, who said he "hopes" he showed enough to hold his spot in the side this coming round, also said the loss of both David Neitz and Russell Robertson made things tough in the final stages of the game, as it drastically altered the Demons' forward set-up.
"We did keep fighting, even though we were down, and we got back to seven points, but it was a big hard when you've got no one to kick it to down there over six foot," he said.
"It was disappointing, we were looking to get the win and we missed out.
"We'll have to go hard at Geelong next week. It's going to be a big test, and we'll really need to come together."
