EMERGING defender Tom McDonald will be driven back to Melbourne from Brisbane, after suffering bleeding on the lung during his side’s 61-point loss to the Lions at the Gabba on Sunday.

McDonald got crunched by Lion Daniel Merrett in a contest during the first quarter.

The round 13 NAB AFL Rising Star nominee came from the field and was replaced by substitute Sam Blease.

McDonald took no further part in the match and was rushed to hospital.

Football manager Josh Mahoney said McDonald's injury meant he was unable to fly back with the team on Sunday night.

“Tom McDonald was not able to fly because of the nature of his injury for the next few weeks,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“Craig Lees, player welfare manager, and Tom are driving back from Brisbane.

“They’ll start driving back on Monday and then stay a night in Sydney and then get back to the club on Tuesday.”

Mahoney added that the club looked at other transport methods, including trains and buses.

But he said with a smile: “This ended up being the best of a bad lot, I suppose.”
