Summary
After an 89-point win over Fremantle last week, the Demons are out to prove they’ve got the consistency to earn themselves a place in the top eight. The rivalry between the Demons and the Tigers has been gaining momentum as the strength of both sides lay with their young guns. Placed ninth and 10th on the ladder, the level playing field between the two sides is evident. Saturday’s game is not just about getting the four points for the Demons, but proving to the competition that they can match it as a top eight team.

Players to watch
Melbourne: Stef Martin
Last round, Martin produced his best game for the season and further enhanced his position as one of Melbourne’s most important players. Ranked in the club’s top 10 for possessions, marks, kicks and handballs, there is no doubt that Martin has been a consistent contributor for the Demons. With Jamar having been sidelined for six matches through injury, Martin has relished his opportunity to step up as the ‘big man’ on the field.

Richmond: Bachar Houli
After making the move from Essendon to Richmond, Houli has blossomed into one of the club’s most consistent and influential players. He has currently taken the most marks for the Tigers and is averaging a consistent 21.7 disposals per game.

Match-up to watch
James Frawley v Jack Riewoldt
The Demons have a few contenders to match up on Riewoldt, who is leading the goalkicking for the Tigers, but Frawley looms the most likely. With several consistent weeks now under Frawley’s belt, he is likely to play an integral role in shutting down Riewoldt’s goalkicking streak. With the support of Colin Garland and Jared Rivers, Melbourne’s backline will play a significant role if its to gain the four points against Richmond.

How’s stat
Many players and officials have made the transition from Tigers to Demons and vice versa. John Northey, former dual Richmond premiership player, went from coaching Melbourne to coaching Richmond, while Neale Balme, who also played in two premierships with Richmond, followed Northey as Melbourne coach. Early personnel who came to Melbourne from Richmond included Andrew Manzie, secretary and recruiting great from 1912 to 1931 who established Melbourne for the 1926 premiership, succeeded by the duo of Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes and Percy Page, as coach and secretary respectively from 1933. Hughes had a fine record as coach and player at Richmond, having coached the team to the 1932 premiership, and having played in the 1920 and 1921 premierships with the Tigers. Melbourne CEO Cameron Schwab also served at Richmond, where he was the youngest ever CEO, and - amongst other recent transfers - the Demons’ former recruiting manager, Craig Cameron, is now at the Tigers.

Memorable match
1940 Grand Final: Melbourne 15.17 (107) defeated Richmond 10.8 (68), MCG
A resounding Melbourne win, this time by 39 points and at the expense of Richmond. Tiger star Jack Dyer was tagged out of the game as Melbourne coach ‘Checker’ Hughes triumphed against the team he had coached to a flag in 1932.
