Jamar experiment to continue
Melbourne coach Dean Bailey is happy with the use of Mark Jamar as a ruck/forward
MELBOURNE will continue to use ruckman Mark Jamar as a part-time forward, in lieu of a permanent key-position player, coach Dean Bailey said.
Jamar was impressive in the last quarter of Melbourne’s 90-point win against Gold Coast, kicking two goals.
Bailey said he and Stefan Martin would both be used forward as key-position prospect Jack Watts and other tall forwards continue to develop.
"That is a position I think we need to fill and we are trying to have more of Martin and Jamar in that role," Bailey said.
"We have drafted three or four blokes in that (forward) role."
Bailey was pleased with Melbourne’s win, although he said the third quarter, which the Suns won, showed the young Demons could still improve.
"I think some of our decision making with our kicking let us down, they rebounded well and created some opportunities to score," he said.
"Our record away is just starting to improve; it is pleasing to come away with the win, particularly with the humidity.
"I think there were patches where there was improvement, our fitness and run at the end was good."
The Demons have a bye next week, before travelling to Perth to play West Coast.
The team will again arrive early in Perth, to be able to train on the ground before the match.
"We will go over to Perth with extra time, when you travel interstate you like to have at least one session on the ground you are playing on," Bailey said.
Bailey, like Carlton coach Brett Ratten before him, thought the Suns had potential.
"I think they will go well, they have got some incredibly talented young players that can make a mark," he said.
"When they have got their 20-40 games in them, you will see them change and they are going to be tough.
"(Zac) Smith is going to be a superstar of the competition; I think the big bloke is going to be something special."
