KEY DEFENDER James Frawley says he didn’t pay any attention to any pre-match hype regarding a tantalising match-up with Richmond goalkicking ace Jack Riewoldt.

The battle between arguably the competition’s best key young defender and forward was highlighted in the build-up to the Melbourne and Richmond clash.

In fact, Melbourne great Garry Lyon penned an article in The Age on Saturday, highlighting the duo and how it could be one of the great match ups in the coming years.

On this occasion, Frawley took the honours over Riewoldt, who added just one goal to his 66 majors in 2010.

Riewoldt also had 10 disposals, as Frawley collected 16 touches and was one of best on ground in Melbourne’s 29-point win over Richmond at the MCG on Sunday.

Despite his outstanding performance, Frawley played down his game, before acknowledging that it was at least “alright”.

“I didn’t actually hear any of that [pre-game match-up hype] and I didn’t read any of the papers,” Frawley told melbournefc.com.au.

“He’s been playing really well and he’s an upcoming gun forward, so I just wanted to have a defensive mindset on him and try and shut him out. He’s a very good player.”

Preferring to focus on the team result, Frawley said the Demons had to keep persisting before shaking the Tigers away in the final term.

“It was a really good win. It was up and down throughout the game, but the boys had some belief and after a big pre-season, the team now believes in itself, so the four points is good,” he said.

“We’ve consolidated four out of five wins now and we’re starting to hit a bit of form now, so we’ll keep continuing that.

“Hopefully we can challenge Hawthorn and we’ll just try and get the four points again, but it’s going to be a tough week again. We’ve got to do our hardest out on the track and do everything right at recovery.”
