Thousands of fans flocked onto the arena to celebrate Melbourne’s first win of the season, capping off Kids’ Day at the MCG.

19,423 was the official attendance figure for the day, but after the game Dean Bailey claimed that it sounded like there were over 70,000 in the Red and Blue Army.

Before the game, 1,000 children were given flags outside the ground, which created a sea of red and blue after every goal.

Of the crowd, Bailey said, “They were outstanding and we thank them for coming along and giving us the support and sticking it out for the game, and I know that they helped us get over the line – there’s no question about that.”

Long after the last kids had left the arena, Bailey celebrated his first win as senior coach by having a kick with his two sons, at the city end of the ground.

New MELBOURNEfc CEO Paul McNamee was another to praise the crowd.

“Thank you so much to all fans who came out and supported the day, particularly given our poor start to the season.  It is pleasing that our supporters were rewarded with a win,” he said.

“The sight of thousands of kids on the MCG having a 'Kick to Kick' and celebrating the game was fantastic.”
