Maric was named on final 22 on Friday night, joining Nathan Jones, Paul Johnson and Rohan Bail on the interchange.
The talented Maric has been on the cusp of selection, having impressed for Casey in recent weeks.
Bate has been relegated to an emergency, along with Matthew Warnock and Austin Wonaeamirri.
It is the first time Bate has been dropped this season, after he missed two matches this season through injury in rounds nine and 10.
The Demons also named midfielder Brent Moloney, who suffered a corked thigh against Fremantle last round. He was named in the starting 18 on Thursday night and has been retained in the team.
Moloney was forced to remain in Perth following the match, before he returned to Melbourne on Tuesday night.
The Demons will be aiming for their first win over the Swans since round four, 2006.
It will also be just the second time the two sides have met at the MCG since 2003.
And Melbourne will be looking to win its first match against the Swans at the ‘G since round 20, 2001.
