Trengove has been touted a future leader since arriving at the club, but the talented 21-year-old says he simply wants to continue progressing his game.
“I haven’t thought too much about it all,” he said from Casey Fields on Wednesday.
“With Neeldy (Mark Neeld) coming in, he’s given everyone a blank canvass and has given everyone an opportunity to show what their leadership qualities are like.
“He’s not going to announce the leadership group until the start of the season, but I’m sure whoever he picks in the leadership group will really lead by example on and off the field and they’ll be great for the club.”
Pressed if he would like to captain Melbourne one day, Trengove said it would be a privilege.
“It’s one of those things that if it comes about, it’s a great honour, but if not, you go about playing footy,” he said.
“It’s something that you really don’t go out seeking and trying to overdo it, because that’s where you can go wrong.
“It’s a natural thing and if it ever happens, it’d be a great honour.”
Trengove, who was selected at No.2 behind former teammate Tom Scully in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft, said he had no ill feeling towards the now Giant.
“I’ve bumped into him a few times since it’s all happened,” he said.
“Obviously it was a bit decision for him and good luck to him - it’s going to be a great challenge for him.
“Hopefully he gets the most out of his career, but we’ve certainly moved on here at the club. We’re ready for the next phase and we’re building towards being a successful team, but all the best to him.”
