FIRST-year Demon Liam Jurrah took a key step towards playing at the highest level by completing his first VFL practice match with Casey Scorpions last weekend.

Melbourne football operations manager Craig Notman said the club was pleased Jurrah got through his first hit-out.

"He showed a little bit. He didn't star or anything, but he's got his first game under his belt and he'll look to push on from there," Notman told melbournefc.com.au.

Jurrah, who hails from the township of Yuendumu in Central Australia, was the first pick in last December's NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft.

"We've obviously had to manage him fairly well, because he hasn't done a pre-season before or much of one before in his life. So we've been very wary of managing his load and making sure we don't load him up with too much early," Notman said.

"It was his first game on the weekend, as he's had a couple of little niggles along the way. It'll take a little bit of time for him to fit into things, but he's been looking forward to the games, as opposed to just doing all of the training.

"He's had a little taste of it and we'll continue to bring him along nice and slowly. He's an exciting talent, but at the same time, you want to be cautious in how quick you push him along, because he's coming from a long way back.

"There is no doubting his talent, but we're getting him acclimatised to life at an AFL club and making sure we bring him along at a nice steady pace."

Meanwhile, second-year Demon Addam Maric, who featured in five matches during 2008, also played his first match for 2009 last weekend.

"Addam was coming back from a hip operation, so it was good to see him out on the track. He ended up with three goals, which was a good start," Notman said.

"Prior to Christmas, the only thing he could do was walk laps, so having him play games now is a bonus. He's obviously just a young bloke, who is itching to play after some rehab, so it was good to see him back."
