‘READ and Write like a Demon’ (RWLAD) is a literacy program that offers students an opportunity to participate in reading and writing workshops with the Melbourne Football Club.

The Read and Write a Demon program’s objectives are to:
* Increase academic success
* Increase self-esteem and motivation to learn, participate in and commit to education
* Reduce need for special education
* Decrease social and financial costs associated with illiteracy
* Encourage a passion for reading and writing
* Encourage students to rediscover their local libraries

On Wednesday, March 30, 25 grade three and four students attended the first of three Read and Write like a Demon sessions.

The first session commenced at 11.00 am with guest speaker, author Michael Panckridge.

Inspired by his passion for sport and desire to get reluctant readers engaged in books, Michael Panckridge put his mind to finding out what it is kids want to read.

Eight years later, he finds himself the author of more than 30 books - his work ranging from the best selling Legends and Anniversary Legends series, the Toby Jones series (a rich blend of cricket and fantasy) and The League of Legends series - rugby league action with the support of former Australian captain Laurie Daley.

His other novels include The Cursed, The Vanishings and The Immortal - adventure books with elements of mystery and intrigue that keep the reader guessing.

Michael lives in Geelong, and is also a part-time teacher.

The students participating in the program were captivated by Michael and the many stories that he had to tell about himself. He also spoke about his obsessive need to read football statistics in a then monthly football magazine, which he religiously bought as a youngster.

Colin Garland will join the Read and Write like a Demon students later in April to share his love for reading, and to participate in a tour of the Bayside libraries.

Halftime for Read and Write like a Demon in Casey

150 students from schools in the City of Casey recently attended the second session of the Read and Write like a Demon program at Casey Fields.

Christopher Milne - the author of Naughty Stories for Good Boys and Girls - visited the students to talk about his books and tell them how he became an author. He was encouraged by his two children, Robert and Peter, to write down the stories that he used to tell them.

Christopher read a story from one of his books to the students and answered all the questions that students had for him.

After the session, Christopher stayed back and signed copies of his book The day the teacher went mad, of which every student received a copy, courtesy of Hardie Grant Egmont.

The next part of the Read and Write like a Demon program consists of the Melbourne Football Club players visiting the schools who participate in the program.

Thank you to program partner Officeworks and the program’s other affiliates - Hardie Grant Egmont, Casey Cardinia Library Corporation and Bayside Library Services - for their ongoing support for this wonderful program.
