JACK Trengove says he’s open minded about retaining the co-captaincy role for 2014.
Although Trengove – the youngest captain in VFL/AFL history – has held the position with Jack Grimes for the past two seasons, the 22 year-old said he would continue to lead if that’s the best for the team, or take on another role that fits in with new coach Paul Roos’ plans.
“Going forward, if [Roos] said ‘we’d rather you had a minor role and not the captaincy’, then I’m all for it. I seriously don’t mind,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“It’s huge privilege and honour to be the co-captain of the Melbourne Football Club, but going forward I’m a team oriented person and whatever’s best for the club, I’m happy to go with.
“It’s not going to change the way I do anything, because it’s the way I’m wired now – trying to lead from the front and be that type of person. Going forward, whatever’s best for the club, I’m happy with.”
Trengove said the experience of trying times during the past two seasons would help him in the long run.
“There’s no doubt it’s been a huge challenge for me and the rest of the leadership group to go through the tumultuous periods that we have in the last two years. There’s no doubt it’ll hold us in good stead for the future,” he said.
“The amount of things we’ve had to deal with, witness and go through over the last two years – there’s so many leadership groups in the AFL that have never gone through that stuff in their whole career, let alone a couple of years.
“There’s no doubt, I’ve enjoyed every second of it - I always love having things put in front of me and challenges to try to strive and keep improving myself and developing.”
Trengove has played 79 matches since he made his AFL debut in round one, 2010.
