SIX WEEKS before ‘The Demons Cup’, a round robin of football games, many students from Southern Cross Primary School had never touched a football.
Never in their wildest dreams did they think they would go on to win the grand final of The Demons Cup held at Casey Fields on Wednesday, October 9.
The Multicultural Schools program, which was run in Southern Cross, Lyndhurst, and Lynbrook Primary Schools, aims to introduce children to AFL and encourage community engagement. The Demons Cup celebrated the completion of the program.
The Multicultural Schools program also focuses on encouraging women to engage with football. The Demons Cup saw five boys teams and four girls teams participate.
As Southern Cross Primary School was premiers in both the girls and boys competitions, it will now progress to the State Cup to compete against winning regional teams from Victoria.
Teacher Leigh Ann-Rutgers from Southern Cross primary said: “To be involved in the day and to see the skills that the students have learned during the program on show today out on the field and the enjoyment they get from the day is just fantastic.”
Sports Education Development Australia (SEDA) students volunteered their time to umpire and assist with delivery of The Demons Cup.
