Todd Viney’s season assessment
Aussie endured a tough year. He had a lot of personal issues coming into last season and also battled with fitness and injury.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Did not play (played in VFL practice match)

VFL: Round 1 v Geelong
I played Aussie as a midfielder and he had seven clearances up until three quarter-time. He finished with nine for the match. He showed a different type of fitness, which was good. Aussie’s a smart player and it was the best game I’d seen him play for Casey - from a consistency perspective. It was a really big game from Aussie. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
It was great to see Aussie in and amongst it. It was his first AFL match for the season and he was right in it straight away, which was great. He was important at times and registered four scoring shots - he finished with 1.3. Aussie continued to improve and was much better for the experience. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Aussie was lively up forward. He won some really good ground balls and continued to work hard front and centre. His form was solid and he continued to improve.Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
We needed Aussie’s work rate to improve, because he was an important player for us. He needed to continue to tackle and chase and put pressure in the forward line. Still, he got another game under his belt. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
I thought Aussie really added some balance to our team when he came on to replace the injured Jack Grimes. He worked really hard at ground level and made an impact when he went onto the ball. We were pleased to see him hit the scoreboard with two goals. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Aussie was in-and-out of the game and probably didn’t make the most of his opportunities. He had his chances in front of goal, but didn’t quite nail them when we needed him to. He needed to work on his finishing and forward pressure. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Injured: knee

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton (emergency)/VFL: Round 9 v Williamstown
Aussie played in the midfield and did some good things. He worked really hard, but ran out of a bit of gas in the final term. We had to rely on Aussie and Tom Scully as our two main midfielders. His work-rate was high. Brad Gotch
