THE DAREBIN Falcons claimed their sixth premiership cup in eight years at the weekend, with the 49 point defeat of Diamond Creek in the Victorian Women's Football League Premier Division Grand Final.
After losing the previous year’s Grand Final by five points, the players were overwhelmed with elation, singing their theme song not once but twice.
Darebin coach Richard Dal Pos said, "I said to the girls, I've been involved in lots of Grand Finals over the last 15 years as a coach in men's footy. But this one is sweet. It really is."
Tipped as hot favourites going in to the big game, Darebin were put to work early in a highly contested first quarter of footy.
The quarter time scores saw Diamond Creek leading by a point - but the advantage did not last.
Aasta O'Connor - representative of the Western Bulldogs’ women’s team - kicked two goals in two minutes to see Darebin take the lead.
At the beginning of the final quarter, the Falcons suddenly held a commanding 17 point lead. From here, Darebin’s ability to win the ball and run saw them blow out the scoreboard, to finish the game with a 49 point win.
Melissa Hickey - draft pick number 11 for Melbourne Football Club women’s team - was awarded best on ground.
