Quarter by quarter: Dees v Roos
The opening term was a see-sawing contest, although the Kangaroos booted two goals in time-on to gain an 11-point advantage at the first break.
But North Melbourne could have led by a greater margin, as it had nine scoring shots to three, booting 4.5 to 3.0.
Bernie Vince was the first multiple goalkicker of the match, booting two by quarter-time and Chris Dawes had Melbourne’s other major.
Second quarter: North Melbourne 7.8 (50) to Melbourne 6.0 (36)
The Kangaroos broke away to a 24-point lead early in the second term, when they booted the first two goals of the quarter.
But the Demons answered strongly, booting three in a row – via James Frawley, Bernie Vince (his third) and Rohan Bail – to peg the margin back to seven points.
However when Levi Greenwood added his second, North Melbourne claimed a 14-point lead at half-time.
Third quarter: North Melbourne 14.12 (96) to Melbourne 8.4 (52)
The Demons started the second half positively, cutting the margin back to seven points, after Dawes booted his second at the five-minute mark.
But the Kangas soon turned the game on its head – booting six unanswered goals to lead by 44 points.
Dawes’ third ended the opposition’s string of goals at the 26-minute mark, but when Aaron Mullett kicked North Melbourne’s seventh for the quarter, the margin was back out to 44 points at the final change.
Final quarter: North Melbourne 15.17 (107) d Melbourne 10.6 (66)
The Demons needed to produce an even bigger comeback than last week to gain the four points – but in the end, it wasn’t to be.
Although Melbourne booted the first two goals via Cam Pedersen and Aidan Riley – reducing the deficit to 34 points at the eight-minute mark – just one more goal was added for the term via Mullett.
The final margin was a 41-point victory to the Kangaroos.
