YOUNG-gun Christian Salem says he’s relishing the opportunity to get stuck into pre-season training, after he was rocked by illness during last year’s pre-season.
Salem, who was drafted at No.9 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft, suffered a thyroid problem, which hindered him, particularly pre-Christmas last year.
“When I came in here [last year], it was a bit frustrating with the thyroid, but I think now that’s all gone and I can look forward to a good pre-season,” he told Dee TV.
“Compared to last year, it was a bit harder with the thyroid problem, as I was about nine kilos lighter. Now, it’s about building my base and getting that fitness, so I can push up the ground this year.
“The first couple of weeks have been with the first to four year [players] and we’ve all got off to a good start and we’ll all come back in good shape. The older boys started this week, so it’s good to have them back.
“Last year they limited us a bit more being a first year player, but it’s good [because] this year we can do a bit more and get some more run into our legs.”
Salem said a handful of new players recruited in the off-season had created a good vibe around the club.
“It’s good having all of the older boys, especially [Jeff] Garlett come in. It’s been a good experience learning off a few of them,” he said.
“It’s a different feel around the club, but all of the boys love it.”
Reflecting on almost a year with the club, Salem said he felt the time had flown.
“It’s gone quick. Billy Stretch started this week, so having another younger guy in here is [good], but it’s a bit weird not being [one of] the youngest anymore,” he said.
“There will be four [players from the NAB AFL Draft] coming in, so I’m looking forward to meeting them.”
