MELBOURNE led for nearly the entire contest at TIO Stadium on Saturday night, yet found itself on the wrong side of the scoreboard when the final siren rang.
The Crows kicked the last five goals of the match to pinch a two-point victory, leaving Dees’ ruckman Max Gawn simply devastated.
“At the moment our club is finding ourselves in this position more times than not and unfortunately, we haven’t found out how to win these games and it’s really, really disappointing,” Gawn told Melbourne Media post-game.
“No doubt we’ll get shown some vision throughout the first three quarters of us playing really well, but it’s going to be hard for me to watch that because I’m pretty fixated on what happened at the end there.
“It’s disappointing, it’s heart-wrenching, it’s almost as low as we’ve got this year.
“We’ve got to pick ourselves up off the canvas, hopefully we get a couple of soldiers back … but the effort’s there, we’ve just got to work on a bit of tactical stuff.”
The Demons led by as much as 31 points in the third quarter on Saturday night, but allowed Adealide to storm home in the latter stages of the match.
“This needs to sit in our belly. This needs to be a real fire in the belly this game,” Gawn said.
“That was a game we had the four points right up until the last minute and that’s as disappointed as I’ve been in a game of footy.”
Melbourne had plenty of opportunities to seal the victory but butchered its chances with eight behinds in the final term.
Although the Dees lacked polish when the game was on the line, the club’s vice-captain was proud of his side’s performance.
“I can’t fault our effort and I haven’t been able to fault our effort for a couple of weeks now,” Gawn said.
“These boys try their backsides off and I’m a really proud leader of this club. They’re putting in all they can, it’s just a couple of fine little tweaks that we’ve got to get going, and the sooner we get that, the more chance we are of winning.
“I can’t question our effort and I hope no one else can.”
