EXPERIENCED Demon Lynden Dunn says Melbourne’s 93-point loss to the West Coast Eagles at the MCG on Sunday was a “wake-up call”.
Speaking post-match to Dee TV, Dunn said it was a dismal day for all associated with the red and blue after Melbourne could muster just 4.6 to 18.15.
“We don’t expect to play like that and [coach] Paul [Roos] has been really clear on saying ‘we must be sick of losing, especially the blokes who have been around for a while’,” he said.
“It pisses the fans off as well, so we don’t accept that as a footy club.
“Unfortunately, we’ve been dishing up those performances for too long and we’ve just got to look forward to GWS next week.”
Dunn said the “whole team was very flimsy” in the opening term, which proved costly in the finish.
“We can’t start games of footy like that – we’re not a club in a position to give away a five or six goal head start at quarter-time and then expect to run a side down,” he said.
“It wasn’t the start we were after and we were on the back foot from the word go unfortunately.”
Dunn said Melbourne needed to be right on its game for next Sunday’s clash against Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium.
“If we start the way we did today against GWS next week, who are a really hard footy team around the contest, then we’re going to get our pants pulled down,” he said.
“Roosy keeps driving the message that it doesn’t matter what state of the game, there is a certain way we want to play and we’ve got to stick to the team structures and team rules.
“We’ve got to build a really good culture, a good footy club and a consistent footy club, and unfortunately at the moment that’s not what we are – and that’s what we’re trying to be.”
Dunn, who played his 119th match for the Demons and was one of the team’s better players against the Eagles, said it was testing be involved in yet another losing team.
“It’s frustrating and I certainly don’t accept it and I get sick of it like everyone else around the footy club,” he said.
“It’s not where the club should be and it’s been down the bottom for too long now. The leadership group, the leaders and the boys that we’ve brought into the footy club are really working hard to turn that around.
“It didn’t look that way today, which was unfortunate, but we just need to keep driving forward, keep driving the same messages, keep positive and really drive the footy club from the ground up.
“It’s got to start this week at training and recovery, and two or three sessions with the footys, with clean touch. You don’t get long to get over these games, so you’ve just got to go again next week.
“We’re looking forward to going to Sydney and they (GWS) got us up there last year, so it should be a good contest and the boys will be up for it.”
