Round two: Melbourne v West Coast Eagles, MCG, 3.20pm

Second quarter: WCE 10.7 (67) to Melb 1.3 (9)

Although Melbourne finally got on the board, when Shannon Byrnes kicked truly at the seven-minute mark, West Coast again controlled the term.

The Eagles booted four goals to one, with Chris Masten kicking a couple for the term. Josh Kennedy also added his second, as West Coast had 10 goals to its name in the opening half.

At the long change, Melbourne trailed by 58 points.

Third quarter: WCE 14.10 (94) to Melb 2.4 (16)

Melbourne’s miserable day continued in the second half when West Coast booted the first four goals to claim an 83-point lead.

It wasn’t until the 23-minute mark when the Demons added their second goal of the day – again via Byrnes.

Entering the final break, Melbourne trailed by 78 points.

Final quarter: WCE 18.15 (123) d Melb 4.6 (30)

With the game well and truly over, it was a case of whether Melbourne could avoid some unwanted records.

At one point, the Demons were in danger of recording their lowest score in almost 25 years – coincidentally it was against West Coast, when they scored 20 points in round one, 1991 – but they managed two goals via Jay Kennedy-Harris and Jimmy Toumpas, to finish with 30 points.

In the end, the Demons went down by a whopping 93 points.
