COACH Paul Roos says the club remains hopeful James Frawley will remain in the red and blue for 2015 and beyond.
Speaking post-match after Melbourne’s 66-point loss to Geelong at the MCG on Saturday, Roos said it was ultimately Frawley’s decision.
“We're regularly talking to the player,” he said.
“It is incumbent on the player, if the player wants to wait with free agency, at some point you need to know, because you need to plan if he is here if he is not here.”
Roos said the AFL was now akin to the NBA with its free agency.
“We saw Lebron [James] go to Cleveland,” he said.
“That’s the way of AFL footy [now] and the NBA has had it for X amount of years.”
“We saw the fanfare with Lebron and that’s where we’re at.”
Reflecting on his own contract experiences as a player, Roos said he always felt better when his future was locked in.
“I can only speak on my experiences as a player. I always felt more comfortable when I was contracted, because I was always worried about injuries … but players are very different now, because the system has changed dramatically,” he said.
“It’s probably a question he (Frawley) can only answer really.”
