IN THE lead-up to his 50th game for Melbourne, midfielder Dom Tyson says he feels entrenched in the red and blue.
Although Tyson started with Greater Western Sydney and played 13 matches with the Giants from 2012-13 – he is about to play his 63rd AFL match against the Adelaide Crows at the MCG on Sunday – Tyson feels right at home at Melbourne.
“I grew up in Melbourne. Mum and Dad and my brothers are in Melbourne as well, along with my school mates as well,” he told Melbourne TV.
“I was keen to come back [to Melbourne] and I debuted up there [with GWS] and had a few milestones that I'll look back on and be proud of, but my time here, I’m certainly fully a Melbourne footy club person.”
Although Tyson didn’t realise he was about to notch up 50 matches with Melbourne, he said it had been “a really great journey” so far with the club.
“It (50 club games) creeps up on you and it’s not one that you necessary celebrate, but it’s always good to pick up along the way,” he said.
“Importantly, it’s three years into my time at Melbourne and I’ve enjoyed every minute. We’ve improved since I first got here, with the way the club’s shaping.
“I’m just really excited to be a part of it.”
Tyson said he had already seen the club come a long way in his two and a half seasons with the club.
“There has certainly been a high turnover of players, but the way we’re shaping up, and the brand of footy we’re starting to play on a more consistent basis is something that hopefully the supporters can see,” he said.
“We certainly feel as a group that are all on board and it’s just a one club feel at the moment.
“Casey is going really well this year, so it’s just exciting and it’ll be good to finish these nine-plus games really strongly.”
And the runner-up in Melbourne’s 2014 best and fairest award said the club now had a “pretty dynamic midfield”.
“[I’m] happy to contribute … and be part of it. Maxy Gawn is going pretty well in the ruck and Jack Viney is having a sensational year and Bernie [Vince] and Nathan [Jones] are doing good things as well,” Tyson said.
“The stronger we are – I feel like we help the team a lot – so I’m really happy to contribute.
“But I’m always striving for complete consistency and I’m never really satisfied, but I feel like there have been some solid performances individually and as a group.”
