CHARLIE Spargo has been voted in for kicking the fourth best goal at Melbourne in 2018, nailing a classy dribble kick against Geelong at Simonds Stadium in Round 18.

The 19-year-old was in good spirits when reminiscing about his best piece of play at AFL level thus far.

“It was easily the best goal I’ve kicked for Melbourne,” Spargo told Melbourne Media.

“Actually, it’s probably the best goal I’ve kicked in my life.”

That night down in Geelong was just his 10th game of senior football, and Spargo still finds it hard to comprehend how he’s living his dream.

“It’s pretty weird, I must admit I did watch the replay a few times over just listening to Richo (Matthew Richardson) commentate and stuff like that,” he said.

“It’s pretty weird and it’s good to do something like that in my first year.”

Spargo’s reaction was relatively subdued considering he is widely known as the biggest celebrator at the club.

He always has a beaming smile on his face when he converts a goal, and his teammates can always rely on him being the first person in line for a high-five if someone else has scored.

“I can’t really control myself when I kick a goal,” he said.

“I don’t know what happens when I celebrate.”

Another trademark of Spargo’s involves his mouthguard.

Every time he slots a major he whips the mouthguard out and holds it in his hand – a habit the man himself is unable to explain.

“I actually don’t know, it’s just like instinct,” Spargo said.

“Most people take it out when they’re having a set shot for goal or something like that, but I usually keep it in and I don’t know why but I just always take it out when I kick goals.

“All the boys give me a fair bit of stick for it, but I don’t know why, it just happens.”

There was excitement aplenty for Spargo throughout his first year in the big time and his highlights reel will only grow in the coming seasons.

“This season was a whirlwind,” Spargo said.

“I didn’t really expect to play that much footy but to play in a few finals and then to have a good year for a club that’s been struggling over the last 10 years was pretty good.

“Everyone at the club was really great, welcoming myself and the other three draftees in.

“So I had a good year and I’m ready to go again for next year.”
