MELBOURNE’s AFLW draftees have been given their new numbers, an auspicious moment that each player cherishes as they become part of the history of the club.
The Demons have announced which numbers will grace the guernseys of incoming newbies Molly O’Hehir, Amelia Dethridge, and Maggie Mahony.
Read about the new numbers below:
No. 11 - Molly O’Hehir
The West Australian, taken at pick number 3 in the 2024 AFLW draft, will don the number 11 jumper.
The nearly 19-year-old has plenty of experience playing against bigger bodies, having made a name for herself already in the WAFLW for South Fremantle.
The number was previously worn by Delany Madigan, who was delisted at the conclusion of the 2024 season.
No. 14 – Amelia Dethridge
Dethridge, considered a ‘smokey’ of the draft, was taken with pick number 63 in the 2024 draft, and will wear number 14.
Dethridge, a State-level hockey player and endurance runner, is a natural athlete who has already begun to sharpen her burgeoning AFL skills.
The number 14 was vacated by Lily Mithen, who moved to the Gold Coast Suns in the 2024 Trade Period.
No. 20 – Maggie Mahony
A childhood friend of Dethridge, Mahony was selected with pick number 20, having been a star of the Oakleigh Chargers.
The two-time Premiership player has previously played as an inside-mid, with the ability to move forward when required.
The number 20 was last worn by Charlotte Wilson in 2023, and was left vacant in 2024.
The AFLW pre-season officially begins on Monday 12 May.
