MELBOURNE has secured former Geelong defender Tom Gillies on the final day of the Gillette AFL delisted player free agency period.

Melbourne general manager of list management Tim Harrington said Gillies will bolster the club’s backline.

“As a big bodied, tall defender, Tom fills a need within our playing group. Having been part of the AFL system for four years and entering his fifth, we believe Tom has a lot to offer the Melbourne Football Club,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

The 22-year-old was delisted by Geelong following the first list lodgement on October 31.

The tall defender played 13 matches with the Cats from 2009-12, including five this year.

He made his AFL debut against Brisbane Lions in round 15, 2009 and received Geelong’s best first year player award.

Gillies, originally from Narre Warren/Dandenong Stingrays, was selected at No.33 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

The Demons have now acquired seven new players for the 2013 season, plus youngster Jesse Hogan, who will be eligible to be primiary listed in 2014.

Shannon Byrnes, Jack Viney, Dominic Barry, Chris Dawes, Cameron Pedersen and David Rodan have also become Demons during the trade/free agency period.

The NAB AFL Draft will be held on Thursday, November 22.
