COACH Mark Neeld remains optimistic utility Rohan Bail can play against Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday.

Bail has missed the past four matches with concussion and was a late withdrawal against Greater Western Sydney at the MCG last round. But Neeld said the club was being “really diligent” with Bail’s health.

“He’s feeling really good within himself and he’s been training,” he said at AAMI Park on Thursday.

“We’re taking what we describe as a really responsible approach and as soon as Ro passes the neurological test that he needs to pass, he’ll be available for selection.

“We’re hoping that’ll be this week.”

Neeld said Bail was an integral part of Melbourne’s immediate and long-term plans.

“He’s an important part of the team and an important part of the future of the club,” he said.

“He’s a great kid and he trains really hard. He’s super fit and as soon as he’s available to play, we’ll strongly consider him straight in the AFL side.”

Neeld said Bail was feeling good and able to train, which made the situation frustrating.

“He’s hasn’t missed a beat, but we’ve got to make sure we’re doing the best thing for Ro and his long-term health.”

Meanwhile, co-captain Jack Trengove plays his 50th match this round, along with midfielder Jordie McKenzie.

Neeld said he expects Trengove, who is in his third AFL season, to keep building on his emerging career.

“[We expect[ continued improvement, both on the field and continued development of his captaincy,” he said.

“We know that Jack works exceptionally hard in all parts of his game.”

Reflecting on its 78-point win against Greater Western Sydney, Neeld said the challenge was to back it up on the road against Brisbane Lions at the Gabba.

“There are certain styles of their game that they’ve changed and there are certain styles to their game that they’ve certainly improved,” he said.

“They’re in better form than what they were in round one [when the Lions defeated the Demons].

“They’ve had a really good couple of weeks. They’ve beaten West Coast and they played really well against the Bulldogs on the weekend.”
