MELBOURNE goalkicking great Russell Robertson says Robert Flower’s legacy will forever remain in the fabric of the club.

Robertson, who kicked 428 goals (the third most in Melbourne’s history) in 228 matches from 1997-2009, said Flower’s passing was significant.

“I’m at a bit of a loss really,” he told Dee TV.

“I know I’m a bit of a jokester on camera a bit and I have a bit of a laugh and try and see the lighter side of football, but I’m struggling to see the lighter side of today, because of what Robbie was to our football club.

“It’s been tough and we’ve tried to keep a smile on our faces in the last 10 years – starting with my old mate Broady (Troy Broadbridge) … we’re just trying to kick on and Robbie was helping with that.”

Robertson knew of Robbie Flower growing up in Tasmania.

“Everyone knew who Tulip was … it’s a great nickname,” he said.

“I had his footy card and Dad spoke very highly of Robbie Flower.

“That’s who I remember when I got drafted – thinking I’m going over to the Melbourne Football Club and I’m going to hopefully play with Jimmy Stynes, Stephen Tingay, Garry Lyon and Todd Viney. Does Robbie Flower still play?

“He is going to forever be in the fabric of the Melbourne Football Club.”
