MELBOURNE is behind the eight-ball in season 2019, sitting 15th on the ladder with just three wins from nine games, but Max Gawn hasn’t been deterred.
The Demon ruckman knows exactly where his side is at and says the ladder position isn’t a primary focus for the group.
“I stopped looking at it after Round 3,” Gawn said on RSN’s Inner Sanctum breakfast show on Tuesday morning.
“I had a feeling we were somewhere down near the bottom and until we win four or five in a row, I might start looking at it again.
“The ladder’s definitely not something that gets brought into how you feel during the week.
“Football clubs, yes, they are dictated a little bit by performance on the weekend, but Monday to Friday you’re in a relatively good mood just being around your friends.
“You’re not really going with the bumps and being really down during the week, especially if you’re playing relatively competitive footy.”
While the Dees are fresh off a 16-point loss to West Coast, they are beginning to hit some form this season.
With wins against Hawthorn and Gold Coast in the past three weeks, Melbourne is looking to get 2019 back on track, and Gawn knows it’s crucial to find some momentum sooner rather than later.
“Obviously we need to start winning and we need to start winning soon and we need to get on a roll,” he said.
“But since the St Kilda game the mindset has been literally just do what you need to do for that day, and then come in and we’ve got a game on the weekend. Take it as if you’re 0-0, get the win and then go onto next week.
“Which is a better mindset than what we had early on when we were 0-3 and we were worried.”
There is still plenty of belief among the group, and the Demons will be looking to take some confidence into this Sunday's clash with GWS at the MCG.
