First quarter: St Kilda 4.4 (28) to Melbourne 1.2 (8)

Goals were hard to come by early in the match. Five behinds were registered before Jesse Hogan kicked the first major at the 11-minute mark.

But it proved to be Melbourne’s only goal for the quarter, as St Kilda booted four in a row when Luke Dunstan opened its account midway through the term.

At the first change, the Saints led by 20 points.

Second quarter: St Kilda 4.7 (31) to Melbourne 3.6 (24)

Like the first term, goals were hard to come by early on.

Seven behinds were scored – four to Melbourne and three to St Kilda – before Chris Dawes landed the first goal of the second term at the 17-minute mark.

The Demons managed back-to-back goals when Dom Tyson kicked truly, reducing the deficit to seven points at half-time, as the Saints were held goalless for the term.

Third quarter: St Kilda 10.8 (68) to Melbourne 5.9 (39)

With the game in the balance at half-time, St Kilda upped the ante significantly in the third term.

The Saints booted six goals to two, gaining a 29-point lead at three quarter-time.

Jesse Hogan and Jeff Garlett were Melbourne’s goalkickers for the period.

Final quarter: St Kilda 12.11 (83) d Melbourne 6.10 (46)

Although Melbourne had a glimmer of hope entering the final term, the fact it didn’t register a score until the 14-minute mark – a behind to substitute Viv Michie – meant that St Kilda was never in doubt in the last quarter.

Goals were again hard to come by and it wasn’t until the 18-minute mark when St Kilda’s Josh Bruce kicked the first for the term.

Max Gawn followed up at the 20-minute mark with Melbourne’s only major of the final term, before Mav Weller kicked the last goal of the match to help St Kilda to a 37-point win.
