DEFENDER Michael Hibberd has capped off an outstanding first season for Melbourne with his debut selection in the 2017 Virgin Australia AFL All Australian team.
The 27-year-old was named in the back pocket among the league’s best 22 for the year.
Hibberd, who played 18 games for the season, has been an impressive recruit for Melbourne after being traded from Essendon in 2016.
The hard-running half-back missed the first month of the season due to an Achilles injury, delaying his return until round five’s ANZAC Day Eve clash against Richmond at the MCG.
Since then, Hibberd has been one of Melbourne’s most consistent performers and a key addition down back, averaging 27.39 disposals per game and making 123 rebound 50s for the year, the fourth highest in the AFL.
His dash and daring play have been a standout feature of his game, along with his ability to provide endless run and carry for his side.
Hibberd’s teammates Jeff Garlett and Neville Jetta were named alongside the backman in the 40-man squad on Monday but missed out on a spot in the final team of 22.
