COACH Paul Roos says Melbourne’s seventh win of the 2015 season was an important notch in assessing its season.

Although Roos suggested one win didn’t always make a major difference in assessing a season, he said in Melbourne’s case it made a mark.

“I think winning today probably puts a bit of an exclamation mark on the improvement of the year,” he said.

“It doesn’t change the fact that we’ve played some really poor footy, but I think seven wins is a pretty good result on the back of two a couple of years ago.

“We’re clearly showing improvement, but it’s just eradicating the really down patches we’re having and the ability to compete against the better sides.

“We’ve played some super footy and we did again today and they’ve had a really good season, so it doesn’t swing on one game, but I remember driving [to the ground] before the game thinking ‘I hope we win today, because it does make the season a lot better when you finish seven’.”

Roos said the final round of the home and away season was important for the Demons, but not for all clubs.

“We had a lot to play for and I’m pleased the players did that, but it just seemed like a bit of a nothing round,” he said.

“Gill [McLachlan] may have talked about having a bye going into the finals – I think it’s a really, really good idea to give the teams a chance to freshen up and play through until the end of the year.

“It is a long year and when you’re a young team and you have a lot of injuries, it does become a grind towards the last five or six weeks.”
