MELBOURNE midfielder Brent Moloney says the Demons have to work on their slow starts to games if they are to be a force in the second half of the season.

The Demons conceded the first three goals of Monday’s draw against Collingwood and allowed seven first quarter goals the previous week against Carlton.

Speaking after the tied game, Moloney admitted the poor starts were an area of concern for the Demons.

“That’s what we’re going to have to focus on over the second half of the season. We’ll look at that in the break and try to work something out because in the end that is why we probably drew the game. We’ve got to get our starts right and try to put some scoreboard pressure on,” Moloney said.

But the Queen’s Birthday tie wasn’t a lost cause for Melbourne who served it right up to the Magpies for the second time of the season after the one-point loss in round two.

Moloney, who had 37 disposals in the draw, said the team would be looking to use the match as a springboard for the second half of the season.

“We match up pretty well against them. We took confidence out of [the round-two] game ... and won three in a row," he said.

“It has been a tight tussle between both teams on both occasions this year. To get a draw is still disappointing but the boys kept fighting. We kept trying to attack the game and win. Hopefully that can kick-start our second half of the season.”

Conceding that the drawn result brought a "nothing feeling" to both sides, Moloney said he’d enjoy the idea of playing extra time to ensure that the contest provided a winner.

“It’d be exciting for the game, to get a result. They could look at that but I’d probably rather five minutes each way just to get a result and hopefully get the four points,” he said.

“All the players were pretty knackered. I don’t know what would have happened but we’ve got some young legs in the team and all we have to do is get it inside 50m and get us the ball.”
