KAYE Hargreaves has won the 2015 Gordon Lockhart volunteer of the year award.
A lifelong supporter, Hargreaves joined as a member in 1991 and has been a member ever since. She also become a player sponsor in 2009 – and currently sponsors Jake Spencer.
Hargreaves lived in South Australia for about 20 years, but still followed Melbourne. Upon moving back to Melbourne, she answered a call for volunteers and became involved all different aspects of the club.
She sold raffle tickets at shopping centres, memberships, assisted with packing and posting, handing out flyers, selling Dudley’s raffle tickets, assisting banquet auctions and at family days. She has also done a variety of other tasks that have needed help with at the old Jolimont office.
Hargreaves also became a familiar face volunteering at Junction Oval bbqs at training, until these eventually finished, due to the change in training times to mornings.
In 1998, Hargreaves became a ‘host mother’ for interstate players. Her first two players were Troy Broadbridge and Luke Taylor from Adelaide, followed by Scott Thompson, Aaron Rogers, Nick Smith and Jared Rivers.
For the past 13 years, along with Julie Lockhart, Hargreaves has been involved in organising the post-match salad rolls for the players and staff.
Hargreaves continues to assist with selling memberships and distributing member scarves at the ‘G on match days.
Her volunteering has been continuous for the past 25 years, through all the changes that have occurred within the football club. Her support and enthusiasm has never wavered.
The award was handed over by Beth Lockhart.
The award was instituted in honour of her late father, Gordon, who was a long time and stalwart volunteer, and whose efforts have been continued by the entire family. Julie, James, Lauren and Beth all continue to give much of their time and maintain a strong interest and involvement in the club.
